If a woman is beaten up by her husband, then people call it domestic violence. But the same woman is harassed mentally, physically, verbally, and financially by her husband, then no one calls it violence, but it is called mutual talk between husband and wife. According to the report released by the National Crime Records Bureau, they have reported 7630 cases of crime against women in Jharkhand. Of these, 857 cases are of domestic violence. However, there has been a decline in these cases in 2020 as compared to the year 2019. In 2019, 1426 cases of domestic violence were reported, which decreased to 857 in the year 2020. But the thing to note is that these cases were recorded the most in the lockdown. The cases registered include mental, physical, verbal, and financial abuse.
Women assume that domestic violence is a part of their lives
Dr. Karuna Jha of Bharti Hospital in Kokar says that many women come to our hospital, who have been victims of domestic violence. But she hesitates to tell anything. Wives have faced a lot of harassment from husbands during the lockdown in 2020. The reason behind this is the loss of the husband’s job. Because of the loss of a job, a husband comes drunk and then quarrels with his wife. Sometimes the dispute escalates so much that it reaches a scuffle.
Dr. Karuna says that women are hurt a lot due to lack of money, household chores, children dropping out of school, and being harassed by their husbands. Due to this, they become victims of depression. Whatever the figures, many women still shy away from raising their voices against this violence. She accepts this harassment as a part of her life and is reluctant to share her pain with anyone.
Physical injury is visible but, mental stress is not clear
Sometimes women give up their lives due to increased depression. There are many such cases, which never reach the police station and many injuries are such that women are afraid to show anyone. People can see the injury of the body, but no one can see or feel the mental injury. There may be fewer cases of domestic violence in 2020 as compared to the year 2019, but there will be many more such cases, which do not reach the count of figures.
National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has released the list of total crimes committed in 2020. According to the report released, there has been a decline in the statistics of crime against women. In the year 2019, 4,05,326 cases of crime against women were reported. At the same time, 3,71,503 cases have been reported in 2020, out of which 28,153 rape cases were reported.
